Statewide Safety Drill Set for April 24; Meghalaya Prepares for Simulated Emergency

April 24, Shillong
Residents across Meghalaya can expect the sound of sirens and unusual activity this evening as authorities roll out a large-scale civil defence exercise aimed at strengthening emergency readiness.
The coordinated drill, scheduled to take place in multiple locations including Shillong, will simulate crisis scenarios such as air raid alerts and power blackouts. Officials say the initiative is part of a broader preparedness program designed to test response systems and improve coordination among emergency services.
Teams from civil defence, fire services, medical units, and local administration will participate in the operation. Visuals from preparation sites show responders practicing rescue operations, including evacuating mock casualties and setting up rapid-response zones.
Authorities have urged citizens not to be alarmed by the sirens or movement of emergency vehicles, emphasizing that the activity is purely a training exercise. In certain areas, residents may be asked to switch off lights temporarily to replicate blackout conditions, helping officials assess real-time compliance and response efficiency.
“This exercise is about readiness, not reaction,” an official involved in the planning stated. “It allows us to identify gaps, improve coordination, and ensure that both responders and civilians are better prepared in case of a real emergency.”
Public cooperation is seen as a key component of the drill’s success. Citizens are encouraged to stay calm, follow any instructions issued by local authorities, and treat the exercise as an opportunity to become more aware of safety protocols.
With increasing focus on disaster preparedness nationwide, Meghalaya’s initiative reflects a growing emphasis on proactive safety measures rather than reactive response.
As sirens echo across the state today, they signal not danger, but preparedness.
