Students Rally for Accountability: The Cockroach Janta Party Protests in Pune

In a fervent display of solidarity and frustration, a group of students gathered at Savitribai Phule Pune University on June 11, inspired by the recently formed Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). Among them was 19-year-old Dhammapal Gavai, who made the 250 km journey from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to voice his concerns over pressing issues that students face today. As a determined aspirant for the Union Public Service Commission exams, Gavai emphasized, “Even as I prepare for my future, I cannot ignore the struggles we face as students. These issues affect us all, and I’m here to stand with my peers.”

The CJP, a satirical yet impactful movement, has gained traction in recent weeks, drawing attention to a string of controversies that have left students disillusioned and anxious about their academic futures. The protest was partly fueled by the cancellation of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) following a leak of the exam paper, which raised serious questions about the integrity of the examination process. Additionally, technical glitches experienced by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) during the evaluation of Class 12 board examination papers have further stoked concerns among students.

Gavai articulated the prevailing sentiment among young people: a profound sense of disillusionment. “Many of us have dedicated years to our studies, hoping to contribute positively to society as future doctors or civil servants, only to face institutional failures that undermine our efforts,” he lamented. The NEET incident, in particular, struck a chord with him, as it represented not just an academic setback but a moral one as well. “Students train to become healers, and now there’s a perception that some are willing to cheat to succeed—what does that say about our future?” he asked.

The Cockroach Janta Party, which launched its inaugural rally in Delhi on May 16, uses satirical humor to draw attention to serious grievances while fostering a sense of community among frustrated students. Their protests have become a platform for highlighting the lack of accountability in educational institutions and government policies that impact students’ lives. As the movement grows, it reflects a collective yearning for change among India’s youth.

The energy at the Pune protest was palpable, with chants echoing a demand for transparency and justice. Students from various backgrounds, armed with placards and slogans, expressed their desire for a system that prioritizes their needs over bureaucratic inefficiencies. The CJP’s unique approach combines humor with activism, attracting those who might feel disillusioned by traditional political avenues.

As the protest unfolded, it became clear that the Cockroach Janta Party is more than just a temporary response to recent events; it embodies a burgeoning movement of young citizens who are unwilling to remain passive in the face of injustice. With their voices echoing in the streets, the students are calling for accountability from those in power, determined to reshape their educational landscape.
