Supreme Court Demands Accountability from National Testing Agency Over NEET Paper Leak Controversy

Supreme Court Demands Accountability from National Testing Agency Over NEET Paper Leak Controversy

The Supreme Court of India has taken a stern stance regarding the ongoing controversy surrounding the alleged paper leak of the 2026 undergraduate National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). On Monday, the court issued a notice to the National Testing Agency (NTA), demanding an explanation in light of multiple petitions that have surfaced following the incident. This situation has raised significant concerns about the integrity of the examination process, prompting the court to reflect on whether any substantial lessons have been learned from previous breaches.

In May 2023, the NTA had to cancel the NEET exam held on May 3, after claims of a paper leak emerged, impacting over 22 lakh candidates who sat for this critical test aimed at securing medical college admissions across the country. This incident echoes similar allegations of malpractice that arose surrounding the 2024 NEET, where accusations of irregularities, including the dubious allocation of grace marks, were also prevalent.

Judges PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe, while hearing the case, expressed their disappointment, indicating that the NTA appears to have made little progress in safeguarding the examination process. “It is unfortunate that they have not learned their lesson,” remarked Justice Narasimha, recalling a prior order where the court had established a committee to investigate the 2024 NEET allegations and recommend necessary reforms. Despite these efforts, the recurrence of such incidents signals a pressing need for more decisive actions.

In response to the recent cancellation, several petitions have been filed in court, seeking not only accountability but also a comprehensive overhaul of the NTA. The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) is among the petitioners advocating for a transformation of the NTA into a more reliable and technologically advanced organization that operates autonomously. They argue that existing structures are inadequate to ensure transparency and fairness in crucial examinations that determine the future of aspiring medical professionals.

The fallout from these repeated controversies raises broader questions about the credibility of India’s medical entrance examinations and the systems in place to uphold their integrity. The NEET, considered one of the most competitive tests in the country, requires a robust regulatory framework to maintain public trust and ensure that deserving candidates can access medical education without the shadow of corruption. As the Supreme Court awaits a response from the NTA, there is a growing call within the medical community and among students for reforms that would fortify the examination process against future lapses.
