VD Savarkar's Controversial Mercy Petitions Revealed in Pune Court Hearing

In a remarkable revelation during a defamation trial in Pune, the grandnephew of Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Satyaki Savarkar, disclosed that his ancestor filed ten mercy petitions to the British colonial government during his imprisonment. This startling claim came to light on Monday as part of a case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is accused of making derogatory comments regarding Savarkar at a London event earlier this year.

The ongoing trial, overseen by Special Judge Amol Shinde, has drawn significant interest owing to the historical and ideological implications tied to Savarkar’s legacy. Satyaki Savarkar’s statements during cross-examination highlighted the complexities surrounding his granduncle’s actions during the freedom struggle. He stated, “It is true to say that Savarkar had filed a clemency petition ten times,” emphasizing that these records exist within government archives, thus lending credibility to his claims.

Despite the evidence presented, Satyaki Savarkar faced pointed questions regarding the implications of these petitions on Savarkar’s character, particularly concerning his title of ‘veer,’ which translates to ‘hero.’ He firmly dismissed suggestions that petitioning for mercy contradicted the image of bravery associated with his granduncle, indicating a nuanced view of the freedom struggle that recognizes the varied paths taken by different revolutionaries.

Interestingly, Satyaki Savarkar acknowledged that numerous other prominent freedom fighters, such as Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Ashfaqulla Khan, did not resort to clemency petitions, illustrating a stark contrast in their approaches. He remarked, “It is true to say that Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt remained steadfast in their ideology and principles until the very end,” suggesting that this steadfastness defined their legacy in a manner distinct from Savarkar’s.

This trial is not merely a legal battle; it also serves as a broader discourse on the interpretation of India’s struggle for independence and the figures who played pivotal roles within it. The figures of Savarkar and Gandhi embody contrasting philosophies that continue to resonate in Indian politics today, making the outcome of this trial significant not only for the individuals involved but also for the ideological narratives that shape contemporary India.
