Chennai, June 27, IPU Media Update News : Renowned Tamil director, actor, and screenwriter K. Bhagyaraj (73) passed away in Chennai following a heart attack. He had recently attended the wedding of actress Khushbu’s daughter in Goa. His sudden demise has plunged the film industry into grief.
Born in the Erode district of Tamil Nadu, Bhagyaraj began his cinematic journey as an assistant director under the acclaimed filmmaker Bharathiraja. He subsequently carved a unique niche for himself as a director, screenwriter, and actor.
He was celebrated for films characterized by stories reflecting the lifestyles of middle-class families, natural dialogue, and emotional depth. He emerged as one of the most successful directors in the Tamil film industry during the 1980s and 1990s.
Over the course of his career, Bhagyaraj directed more than 25 films and acted in over 75 movies. Films such as ‘Mundhanai Mudichu’ , ‘Andha 7 Naatkal’, and ‘Darling Darling Darling’ earned him enduring acclaim. He also appeared in Telugu films like ‘Kubera’, ”35′, ‘Seetha’, ‘Red Alert’, and ‘Mem Vayasuku Vacham’.
He also directed the Hindi film ‘Aakhree Raasta’, which starred Amitabh Bachchan, Sridevi, and Jayaprada and achieved significant success. It is noteworthy that the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and actor MGR recognized Bhagyaraj’s contributions and hailed him as his successor in the film industry. Bhagyaraj’s family includes his wife Poornima Bhagyaraj, son Shanthnu Bhagyaraj, and daughter Saranya.
