Bangalore district, Monday:

A sudden burst in a major underground water pipeline early Monday morning disrupted water supply across several neighbourhoods in the district, forcing civic authorities to initiate emergency repair work and issue advisories to residents.

According to officials from the municipal water supply department, the rupture was detected around dawn near a busy arterial road after residents reported waterlogging and a sharp drop in pressure in household taps. The damaged pipeline is part of a primary distribution line supplying multiple residential layouts and commercial pockets.

Civic engineers cordoned off the affected stretch and diverted traffic to prevent further damage and ensure public safety. Repair teams were deployed with heavy machinery to excavate the area and assess the extent of the damage. “Preliminary inspection suggests the pipeline failed due to wear and tear combined with soil pressure,” a senior official said, adding that replacement of a damaged section was under way.

Residents in at least four localities reported either no water supply or severely reduced flow through the morning. Tanker water arrangements are being made as an interim measure, officials said, while hospitals and essential services are being prioritized.

Local shopkeepers expressed concern over prolonged disruption, noting that repeated pipeline failures have affected daily business. Residents’ welfare associations have also demanded a long-term solution, including comprehensive replacement of ageing pipelines.

The civic body has appealed to residents to avoid the area and to use water judiciously until normal supply is restored. Officials said repair work is being carried out on a war footing and that an update will be issued once pressure testing is completed.

This is the second major pipeline-related disruption reported in the district in recent weeks, once again highlighting the strain on ageing urban infrastructure amid rising demand.
