Ahmedabad Faces Severe Heatwave as Temperatures Reach 44°C

Ahmedabad is experiencing intense summer conditions, with temperatures reaching around 44°C, affecting daily life, public health, and outdoor work across the city. The prolonged heat has impacted residents including office workers, daily wage earners, street vendors, and traffic personnel working outdoors.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heatwave warnings for several parts of Gujarat, including Ahmedabad. Authorities have advised residents to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours.

Health officials have reported concerns related to heat-related illnesses such as dehydration, heat exhaustion, dizziness, and heatstroke, particularly among children, elderly citizens, and individuals working outdoors. Medical professionals have advised people to remain hydrated, wear light cotton clothing, and avoid unnecessary outdoor activity between afternoon hours.

Ahmedabad’s administration has activated measures under its Heat Action Plan, including public awareness campaigns, drinking water distribution at key locations, alerts through media and communication systems, and coordination with hospitals and emergency services.

The heatwave has also affected economic activity, especially for outdoor workers such as construction laborers, delivery workers, and small vendors. Some educational institutions have reportedly adjusted schedules to reduce heat exposure among students. Electricity demand has also increased due to higher cooling requirements.

Urban planners and environmental experts have previously highlighted that rising temperatures, urban expansion, and reduced green cover may contribute to increasing heat stress in cities. Suggestions for long-term mitigation include expanding green spaces, improving heat-resilient infrastructure, and strengthening climate preparedness measures.

Authorities continue to advise residents to take precautions as high temperatures are expected to persist in parts of western India.
