New Delhi: The Government of India has appointed General NS Raja Subramani as the country’s third Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), succeeding General Anil Chauhan. The appointment places General Subramani in a key leadership role overseeing military coordination and strategic defence planning among the three armed forces.
A senior military officer with decades of service, General Subramani has held several important operational and command assignments during his career. His experience includes postings in counter-insurgency operations, military intelligence, and command-level leadership in different regions of the country.
General Subramani was commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985. During his service, he held several senior positions, including command responsibilities in different military formations. He also served in advisory and staff roles related to national security and defence operations.
As the Chief of Defence Staff, General Subramani will serve as the Principal Military Adviser to the Defence Minister and as the Permanent Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee. The role includes promoting coordination among the Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as supporting defence modernization efforts.
Among the key priorities associated with the CDS position are efforts toward improving coordination between the three services, enhancing defence preparedness, and supporting indigenous defence manufacturing initiatives under government policies.
General Subramani has received several military honours during his service career, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), Sena Medal (SM), and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) for distinguished service.
