Air Force One Fleet: Boeing VC-25A Nears End of Service as New Generation Aircraft Awaits
The Boeing VC-25A aircraft, commonly known as Air Force One when carrying the President of the United States, continues to serve as the primary presidential transport aircraft as it approaches the later stage of its operational lifecycle.
The current fleet, consisting of two modified Boeing 747-200B aircraft (tail numbers 28000 and 29000), has been in service since the early 1990s. These aircraft have transported multiple U.S. presidents over the past three decades, providing secure and fully equipped airborne command facilities.
The VC-25A fleet is expected to eventually be replaced by the next-generation VC-25B, based on the Boeing 747-8 platform. The new aircraft program has been under development to enhance range, efficiency, communications systems, and overall operational capability.
While discussions around modernization and transition of the presidential air fleet have been ongoing, the VC-25A aircraft remain in active service until the new fleet is fully operational. No official “final flight” or ceremonial retirement of the current Air Force One aircraft has been announced by U.S. authorities.
The Air Force One program remains one of the most secure and technologically advanced presidential transport systems in the world, symbolizing both continuity and evolution in U.S. executive aviation.
