ECI Reports Seizures Worth ₹510 Crore Ahead of West Bengal Assembly Elections

West Bengal:

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has reported seizures worth over ₹510 crore in West Bengal ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, according to official data. This figure is higher than the ₹339 crore recorded during the 2021 Assembly elections.

Following the announcement of the election schedule on March 15, 2026, the Commission directed all states and union territories to implement the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). Preparatory meetings were held with senior administrative and law enforcement officials to review arrangements for conducting elections.

As part of enforcement measures, more than 2,700 Flying Squad Teams and 3,100 Static Surveillance Teams have been deployed across the state. These teams are monitoring sensitive areas, conducting checks, and responding to complaints related to possible violations.

Data from the Election Seizure Management System (ESMS), covering the period from February 26 to April 27, 2026, indicates the confiscation of cash, liquor, narcotics, and other items. This includes over 48 lakh litres of illicit liquor and narcotics valued at more than ₹110 crore, along with other materials classified as inducements.

Officials stated that such enforcement actions are aimed at ensuring compliance with election guidelines and maintaining transparency in the electoral process.

The Election Commission has reiterated its commitment to conducting free and fair elections and has urged all stakeholders to follow established rules and regulations.
