ED Conducts Raids Linked to Punjab Minister Sanjeev Arora Over Alleged Money Laundering

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has intensified its scrutiny of Punjab Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora, launching extensive searches at five locations across Delhi, Gurugram, and Chandigarh. These actions are part of an ongoing investigation into alleged money laundering activities, particularly involving his company, Hampton Sky Realty Limited.

The raids, reported on Saturday, included Arora’s residence and the offices of his business. According to sources familiar with the case, the ED is investigating claims of fraudulent Goods and Services Tax (GST) transactions linked to significant exports of mobile phones worth over Rs 100 crore. It is alleged that these dealings serve to facilitate the round-tripping of illicit funds, transferring money from Dubai back into India.

Officials disclosed that the investigation has uncovered a widespread operation purportedly executed by Arora’s company, which involved acquiring fake GST purchase invoices from non-existent firms in Delhi. This scheme allegedly allowed the minister to claim fraudulent input tax credits, GST refunds on export transactions, and duty drawbacks, which are all essential benefits designed for legitimate business operations.

The ED’s actions are not isolated, as they previously raided properties connected to Arora and his associates in April under the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). The agency’s focus on Arora is underscored by earlier allegations concerning the misuse of industrial land for unauthorized residential projects. In a highly publicized case from 2024, similar concerns about financial irregularities had already drawn the ED’s attention to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader.

As the investigation unfolds, the political implications for the AAP, headed by Punjab Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, are significant. The party has vocally criticized the inquiries, framing them as politically motivated attempts to undermine their governance. The AAP has gained considerable traction in Punjab and nationally, emphasizing corruption-free governance as one of its core tenets. However, the association with such high-profile investigations could potentially tarnish this image.

The ongoing developments reflect a broader trend in Indian politics where financial scrutiny and government accountability are increasingly coming under the limelight. As the ED continues its investigations, the outcome may not only affect Arora’s political career but could also have repercussions for the AAP’s standing in Punjab and beyond. With the opposition parties closely watching these developments, the situation is likely to evolve rapidly.
