Srinagar, April 14: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday highlighted the important role of the banking sector in supporting the region’s economic development, with a focus on financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, and sustainable growth.
According to Kashmir News Corner (KNC), the Chief Minister was addressing the Axis Bank Senior Management Confluence in Srinagar. He noted that banks play a crucial role in expanding access to credit, promoting digital financial services, and supporting small businesses and startups.
Several officials and representatives from the banking sector attended the event, including senior executives from Axis Bank, along with government representatives.
The Chief Minister stated that while Jammu and Kashmir may have limitations in terms of geographical size and market scale, it continues to offer significant opportunities in sectors such as tourism, agriculture, horticulture, and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Referring to ongoing development in the region, he pointed to improvements in infrastructure, tourism activity, and the growth of entrepreneurship. He emphasized that the banking sector can support these areas by ensuring timely financial assistance and adopting technology-driven solutions.
Highlighting tourism as an important sector, he suggested improvements in visitor management systems at key destinations, including better queue management and time-based ticketing. He also noted the need for collaboration between government bodies and financial institutions in implementing such solutions.
At the same time, he underlined the continued importance of agriculture and horticulture to the region’s economy. He called for targeted financial products and stronger value chains to support farmers and improve market access.
The Chief Minister also encouraged banks to expand their presence in underserved areas and increase support for startups, MSMEs, and youth entrepreneurship. He reiterated the government’s willingness to work closely with financial institutions to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth in Jammu and Kashmir.
