Kerala Celebrates Vishu with Traditional Rituals and Festive Spirit

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala marked the festival of Vishu today with traditional rituals and celebrations across the state and among the Malayali diaspora. The day began early in the morning with families viewing the Vishukkani, an auspicious arrangement that typically includes Kani Konna (golden shower flowers), seasonal fruits, grains, and other symbolic items associated with prosperity.

As part of the celebrations, elders performed Vishukkaineetam, a customary practice of giving coins and blessings to younger members of the family, signifying goodwill and the sharing of prosperity. Households also prepared the traditional Vishu Sadhya, a festive meal featuring a variety of dishes, reflecting the cultural richness of the occasion.

Vishu holds cultural significance in Kerala, particularly in connection with the agrarian calendar and the beginning of the Malayalam month of Medam. The festival is widely observed as a time for reflection, renewal, and community bonding.

Despite changing lifestyles, Vishu continues to be celebrated with enthusiasm, highlighting the importance of tradition and cultural continuity in the state. Observances were reported from various parts of Kerala, with people participating in rituals and family gatherings.
