Rupamoni Orang, a Class XII Science student of Bokakhat Higher Secondary School, has been selected to participate in the prestigious SAKURA Science Program in Japan. She departed today along with three other meritorious students from Assam and officials of the Secondary Education Department, Government of Assam.
The SAKURA Science Program is an international student exchange initiative launched by the Japan Science and Technology Agency in 2014 to promote science education and cultural exchange among Asian countries. India has been participating in the program since 2016.
Rupamoni is the first student from Bokakhat subdivision and Bokakhat Higher Secondary School to be selected for the program.
Other students selected from Assam include Jyotishman Barman of B. Borooah College, Manjit Sharma of Tihu College, and Principriya Gogoi of Gogamukh Higher Secondary School.
The Assam delegation joined the Indian contingent at the headquarters of National Council of Educational Research and Training in New Delhi. The student delegation is scheduled to fly from Delhi to Tokyo on the night of May 23 and will participate in the program from May 24 to May 30 before returning to India.
Rupamoni had earlier secured the first position in Assam in the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Examination conducted by the Government of India during 2022–23, which contributed to her selection for the international program.
She is the daughter of Babul Orang of Samaguri, Nagaon district, and currently stays at her maternal uncle’s residence in Kandhulimari village, Bokakhat, while pursuing her studies.
