Uddhav Thackeray Dismisses Speculations of Merger with Congress Amid Political Unrest

In a significant statement during the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) party’s 60th foundation day celebration in Mumbai, party chief Uddhav Thackeray firmly rejected any notion of his faction merging with the Congress party. Thackeray’s comments came in light of ongoing political turbulence and speculation regarding the future alignment of his party.

Addressing his supporters, Thackeray posed a rhetorical question, stating, “If we didn’t merge with the BJP [Bharatiya Janata Party] despite being allies for 30 years, how can we merge with the Congress?” This remark highlights not only his commitment to maintaining the distinct identity of his faction but also reflects the deep-rooted political rivalries within Maharashtra. The Shiv Sena has historically been more aligned with the BJP, yet recent political dynamics have led to considerable tension between the two.

Thackeray expressed concern over the possibility that the Maharashtra BJP might absorb the faction led by his rival, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. He noted, “We have had severe political differences with the Congress, but it never tried to destroy the Shiv Sena like the BJP is doing.” This assertion illustrates the ongoing strife between the factions, as Thackeray grapples with internal dissent and external pressures.

Compounding these challenges, speculation has arisen that six out of the nine Lok Sabha MPs from Uddhav Sena could be contemplating a shift to Shinde’s faction. This speculation was fueled when the six MPs notably skipped a recent parliamentary party meeting, leaving the other three MPs and party stalwart Sanjay Raut to discuss pressing matters. In response to this potential defection, the party has issued notices to the six MPs, demanding a response within seven days or face disciplinary measures.

Thackeray, demonstrating his resilience, stated he is prepared to step down as party chief if the cadre loses confidence in his leadership. Yet, he reaffirmed his determination to continue fighting for the party’s integrity and principles. As Maharashtra’s political landscape remains volatile, the outcome of these internal disputes may have far-reaching implications for the future of the Shiv Sena and the state’s governance.
