West Bengal Police Investigate TMC Bank Accounts Following Rebel MLA's Allegations

In a significant development in West Bengal’s political landscape, the state police have initiated a probe into three bank accounts associated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC). This investigation comes on the heels of a complaint lodged by rebel MLA Biswanath Das, raising questions about the financial dealings and potential illegality surrounding the party’s funding.

According to reports from The Times of India, the police have not only begun a thorough investigation but have also ordered a freeze on any withdrawals from these accounts. The inquiry will delve into potential violations under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertain to organized crime, cheating, and criminal conspiracy, along with provisions of the Information Technology Act.

The catalyst for this investigation was Das’s allegations that the funds being deposited into the TMC accounts might stem from illicit activities. In his complaint, he suggested a need for clarity on the source and routing of these funds, signaling a serious concern about transparency within the party’s financial operations.

This situation has been complicated further by recent developments involving former state minister Aroop Biswas. On June 12, he requested HDFC Bank to freeze the party’s account, citing uncertainties related to the oversight and control of TMC’s financial affairs. Notably, Biswas claimed to act in his capacity as the party’s treasurer. However, sources within the party indicated to NDTV that Biswas had been removed from his position on June 5 after losing the Tollygunj seat to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the Assembly elections.

The political rivalry between TMC and BJP continues to intensify, and this investigation has the potential to escalate tensions further. The allegations made by Das have not only put the spotlight on TMC’s financial practices but also raised questions about party dynamics and accountability. As the police delve deeper into the investigation, the implications for TMC and West Bengal’s political scenario remain to be seen.
