Delhi's Cooling Zones Provide Temporary Relief Amidst Scorching Heatwave

As Delhi grapples with soaring temperatures this summer, the state government has taken measures to provide relief to its residents. Set up near the Dhansa Bus Stand Metro Station in South West Delhi, a white marquee tent has been established as a designated “cooling zone”. This initiative is part of a broader heatwave response plan that includes 14 cooling zones across eight districts, aimed at combating the extreme weather conditions affecting vulnerable populations.

Additionally, the city has deployed 13 mobile heat relief units that distribute vital resources such as water, oral rehydration solutions, and other supplies to help those who find themselves exposed to the blistering heat. For individuals fortunate enough to access these facilities, they offer essential respite from the oppressive heat. High temperatures combined with humidity levels and physical activity can severely tax the body’s natural cooling mechanisms, leading to symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, dehydration, and in extreme cases, heat stroke.

On June 1, measurements taken within the Dhansa cooling zone highlighted the effectiveness of these efforts. At around 2:30 PM, the outdoor air temperature soared to 38.9°C, while the conditions inside the cooling tent were significantly more bearable at 33.3°C. Furthermore, the globe temperature—a measure of radiant heat emanating from surrounding surfaces—dropped from 43.8°C outside to a much cooler 34.3°C indoors. The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature, which assesses environmental heat stress by accounting for temperature, humidity, radiant heat, and air movement, recorded values of 33.5°C outside and a much more comfortable 29°C within the cooling zone.

While these cooling zones provide a much-needed refuge for many, they are not a permanent solution to the ongoing challenges posed by extreme heat. The World Health Organization, along with other meteorological bodies, underscores the increasing severity of heatwaves, which are becoming more commonplace due to climate change. The urgency of addressing these issues is more pressing than ever, especially as the temperature continues to climb and the heatwaves become more prolonged.

As Delhi residents seek shelter in these cooling zones, it becomes evident that while such initiatives offer temporary relief, a long-term strategy addressing the root causes of climate change and urban heat is essential. The government’s response is a step in the right direction, yet it highlights the need for continued innovation and investment in infrastructure that can withstand the impacts of climate change and provide sustainable solutions for all citizens.
