Prime Minister Modi to Attend First Official Paschim Banga Dibas Celebration in Hooghl

TARAKESWAR, WEST BENGAL — June 20, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit West Bengal on a two-day tour, during which he will participate in the state’s first official government celebration of “Paschim Banga Dibas” in Tarakeswar, Hooghly district.

The event is expected to be attended by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and other senior government officials. Authorities have put extensive security arrangements in place ahead of the visit.

The West Bengal Government has designated June 20 as the official statehood day. The date commemorates the June 20, 1947 proceedings of the Bengal Legislative Assembly, which preceded the partition of Bengal and the formation of West Bengal as a state within independent India. The decision represents a change from the previous practice of observing the occasion on Poila Baisakh, the Bengali New Year.

Political leaders and historians have expressed differing views on the significance and observance of the state’s foundation day. The issue has remained a subject of public and political discussion in recent years.

During the visit, the Prime Minister is also expected to inaugurate and review several development projects across the state. According to official sources, the programme includes meetings and events related to infrastructure, public services, and regional development initiatives.

On the second day of the visit, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to participate in International Yoga Day celebrations at Kolkata’s Red Road. Officials have estimated that thousands of participants may take part in the event, which forms part of nationwide observances marking the occasion.

State authorities have advised commuters to expect traffic diversions and enhanced security measures in parts of Hooghly and Kolkata during the visit.
