Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the Chief Minister of West Bengal on Saturday, marking a significant political shift in the state. Adhikari’s ascension to this role makes him the first BJP leader to hold the chief ministerial office in West Bengal, a position that has long been dominated by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by Mamata Banerjee.
The swearing-in ceremony took place just five days after the BJP secured a landmark victory in the state assembly elections, where the party won 207 of the 294 seats, effectively ending TMC’s 15-year tenure. A majority in the assembly requires 148 seats, and the TMC managed to secure only 80 seats in this election.
Governor RN Ravi administered the oath of office to Adhikari in a ceremony that drew a significant audience, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and various leaders from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Alongside Adhikari, four other BJP leaders, including Dilip Ghosh and Agnimitra Paul, were also sworn in as ministers, signaling a strong BJP presence in the state government.
Adhikari, who formerly served as a minister in the TMC government, made headlines in 2020 when he defected to the BJP. His political journey has been noteworthy; he famously defeated Mamata Banerjee in the 2021 assembly elections, winning by over 15,000 votes in the Bhabanipur constituency. This victory was particularly significant given that Banerjee had previously won in Nandigram, where she faced Adhikari in a tense electoral battle.
Despite the jubilant victory for the BJP, the aftermath of the election has been marred by reports of political violence, communal intimidation, and vandalism across West Bengal. The political landscape remains charged, with many residents expressing concerns about the implications of this dramatic shift in governance.
As Suvendu Adhikari embarks on his tenure as Chief Minister, the eyes of West Bengal and the nation are closely watching how his government will navigate the challenges ahead, particularly in fostering unity and addressing the grievances that have surfaced during this tumultuous electoral cycle.
